Amazon.com's Omnivoracious blog grabbed a moment with A Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin to ask about his favorite book of 2012. What was it, you might ask: A far-flung fantasy, maybe? No, but it might as well be. Martin's favorite book of the year, Tom Reiss's The Black Count, is an unbelievable action tale that's worthy of any fantasy novel - but it's all true. It's the story of General Alex Dumas, a biracial former slave who fled to Paris where he was schooled as a sword-fighter and joined the French army, rising through the ranks to become a powerful general. He was a black man whose power and ambition would not be stymied by the prejudices of 18th century French society, yet until Reiss' book, his life had been forgotten to history due to the efforts of his nemesis Napoleon. It wasn't forgotten to fiction, though: The Black Count lived on as the secret inspiration behind the adventure tales of his son - Alexandre Dumas. Now the true story can be told. If you like adventure stories at all, you should take George R.R. Martin's lead and pick up this incredible biography.
